Driving out of a school parking lot this week during the morning drop-off chaos, I was stopped by a woman who gave me a handwritten note, which introduced her, explained that she was from Malawi, had gardening experience and was looking for work. She had gone to the trouble of writing out dozens of these notes by hand and getting up at the crack of dawn to try and feed herself and her family.

I can’t imagine how difficult her life must be. Many South Africans are struggling as it is; it must be that much harder as a foreigner. In that situation, how tempting must it be to feel completely overwhelmed, even paralysed, to curl up in the foetal position and say, “It’s not fair. It’s too hard. Why me?” But instead she took action. She used what resources she has, she picked a good spot to promote herself and executed her simple strategy very effectively – she took action.

She inspired me to think differently when I’m avoiding a problem or ignoring an unfulfilled dream. How about you – is there a simple action you can take today, which might not change the world overnight, but may just get us moving?
