What sometimes happens in churches during our Good Friday service is that we can become morbidly fascinated by the horror of the crucifixion and find ourselves focusing on the specific details of the pain that Jesus endured on the cross. All of that may be true (and we are forever grateful for all that he went through on our behalf) but I suspect that Jesus would prefer for our attention during this weekend to move from the what to the why of Easter.

In our Good Friday service this year, our call to worship includes the line, “This is not a day for mourning but for awe, wonder, love and gratitude.” That seems to get the tone right, doesn’t it? We are invited to remember with awe and wonder that God came into our world and gave himself for you and me, so that we could know what it is to truly live.

And, as we look ahead to Sunday, wonderfully, we are also invited to remember and celebrate that love wins, that death is defeated, and that we are joined with Jesus in his triumph as a resurrected people, a people of hope. May you experience the wonder and hope of this season over these days**!**
